True North Salmon

All about Atlantic Salmon and PCBs

Because of confusing and often contradictory information and media coverage, some consumers are confused about how healthy seafood really is.

In reality, farmed Atlantic Salmon is a safe, nutritious and tasty food choice recommended by Health Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and food nutritionists.

While scientific studies indicate that trace amounts of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are found in most foods including both farmed and wild salmon, they are well within acceptable limits. And they are similar to the amounts found in everyday foods like beef, chicken, pork, eggs and butter.

Eating East Coast Atlantic salmon delivers nothing but benefits.

Canadian fish consumption guidelines are established by the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency), while American standards are set by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Research shows that the contaminants found in East Coast Atlantic salmon fall far below both Canadian and American acceptable limits for PCBs, mercury, dioxins and furans. This means that East Coast Atlantic salmon remains a safe and healthy meal choice.
