We consider ourselves stewards of the environment and we have the highest interest in preserving its biodiversity. After all, we depend on producing great salmon products in the future, so it's vital to act in an environmentally-sustainable manner.
We comply with many strict federal, state and provincial regulations that are in place to protect the environment. Every Canadian farm is subject to comprehensive environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and every Maine farm is subject to initial evaluation and continuing monitoring by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection as provided for under the Code of Maine Regulations and Federal Water Pollution Control Act.
While properly run and properly located salmon farms, like the ones we operate at True North, have a relatively small impact on the environment, we still work hard to make sure that our processes and practices respect the environment and minimize our impact.
From the careful selection of farm sites to regular monitoring and sampling of sediment under cage sites, we take all the necessary steps to ensure the surrounding areas remain healthy for our salmon and for all the other creatures that live in the ocean.
When a location is selected for a fish farm, many factors, like water temperature and oxygen levels, are considered in order to maximize the health and containment of the salmon and to minimize any potential impact to the natural environment. That's why we choose sites with deep waters and good tidal movement for our farms.
Salmon farming is a highly regulated industry. Regulations are set by provincial, state and federal departments of environment, oceans, marine resources, agriculture and health. These regulations help ensure a healthy, stress-free environment for the fish and help maintain the natural beauty of the marine landscape that surrounds True North farms.
All aquaculture sites undergo a rigorous environmental review under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. This ensures that farms do not harm or create a hazardous alteration or disruption to wild fish habitat or interfere with other activities on the marine landscape. Our ocean containment systems are designed and built in-house according to a very high standard set by our farm managers, so the entire process is carefully controlled and closely monitored.
